According to Turkish source, Hurriyet, Arsenal star player Mesut Ozil held secret talks with Turkish giants Fenerbahce in the summer. The report has it that Ozil flew in from Germany to Turkey in the summer for talks on joining the Turkish club now handled by Dutchman Dick Advocaat. The report further reveals that Ozil spent only 17 hours in the Turkish capital before departing back for Germany.
It seems the move did not materialise as Ozil stayed back at Arsenal scoring six goals in 11 games for the Gunners in all competitions. The midfielder also got his first career hat-trick in the Champions League against Ludogorets this season as Arsenal ran out 6-0 winners on the night. Though the credibility of this report is highly in doubt considering the gulf in quality between Ozil’s current club Arsenal and Fenerbahce who are yet to make the group stage of the Champions League in more than five years, one thing that football fans all know is that Ozil has a Turkish heritage as his parents are Turks who immigrated to Germany where he was born. This might be the reason for the German’s links with Fenerbahce who have underachieved in recent times.
The Turkish club were recently humbled in the Europa League last week at Old Trafford as Jose Mourinho’s side beat them 4-1 on the night making a mockery of their recent form under Dick Advocaat who succeeded Viktor Perreira after his sacking in August following his Champions League qualification loss to Monaco.
It is highly unlikely that Ozil who is yet to extend his contract with Arsenal will join Fenerbahce any time soon as the German is regarded as one of the best players in the world in his position. The German’s salary will also be a stumbling block for Fenerbahce considering he is in line to be offered an excess of £200,000-per-week wages by Arsenal in his new contract which is massive for a club like Fenerbahce considering their recent financial struggles.
