Manchester United are hoping that Paul Pogba is the key to helping them beat Arsenal and Chelsea to the signing of Atletico Madrid’s £89.3m-rated attacker Antoine Griezmann, according to the Sun.
Griezmann has become one of the best strikers in world football since moving to Atletico from Real Sociedad in 2014 and followed up a superb debut season by scoring 32 goals in all competitions for Diego Simeone’s side last campaign.
The 25-year-old continued that fine form in to the European Championship finals where he scored six goals to help France reach the final and he was later named as the Player of the Tournament.
Understandably, Griezmann has attracted plenty of interest with the Daily Star reporting last month that Arsenal, Chelsea and Manchester United were all ready to battle-it-out over his signature next summer after the player questioned his long-term future.
The Frenchman claimed that he would consider leaving Atletico if boss Diego Simeone was to depart after the Argentinean coach took the unusual step of reducing the length of his contract at the Vicente Calderon.
Griezmann also recently sacked his agent and installed his father as his new representative leading to speculation that he was preparing for a move next summer and it seems three of England’s biggest clubs are ready to try and lure him to the Premier League.
However, the Sun claim that United hope that Paul Pogba will give them the edge over their London rivals with Griezmann admitting this week that he’s grown close to Red Devils midfielder over the past year.
He’s quoted as saying by the Sun:
“We get on very well. It is true that the Euros has brought us closer together still.
“Paul is a really nice guy. He is it! We send messages, Snapchats. He’s really a good friend. When he plays with his club, I try to look at it to see if he had a good game or not.”
Any potential deal for Griezmann is going to be expensive as his buyout clause is worth a whopping £89.3m which would make his signing one of the biggest in world football if Atletico were to demand the full value of his release fee.
