It is no doubt that Santi Cazorla when fit is a key player for Arsenal. Unfortunately he hardly stays fit in the last two years. Last season, he missed as much as three months of action and in his absence, Arsenal’s title challenge ended. This season so far, he has played less 15 games in all competition and according to various reports, he is very unlikely to return to action again this season.
Arsenal were doing very well before Santi got injured four months ago, we were first on the table unfortunately since he got injured, our form has declined and we are now 4th on the table, 8 points behind leaders Chelsea. However, this didn’t stop Arsenal from offering him a new contract deal which underlines his importance. Many questioned the wisdom in giving the Spaniard a new contract and one can see why. His problems with his achilles doesn’t seem like one that will go away anytime soon and as he is already 33, only few people would have complained if Arsenal had chosen to release him at the end of this season rather than giving him a new contract. Or maybe Arsenal didn’t want to lose the former Malaga player only a free transfer hence the one year contract renewal?
But according to reports in the Turkish media, Arsenal may have been given a perfect opportunity to get rid Cazorla as according to Turkishfootball.com, Turkish giants Fenerbahce are interested in signing Cazorla in the summer transfer window.
Personally I think letting him go will make sense especially if someone is willing to pay as much as 6-10 million pounds for him. Maybe it is time Arsenal sounds out some Chinese clubs. If two or more clubs are keenly interested in signing Cazorla, it can only be to Arsenal’s advantage.
Arsenal can take the money from his sale, add to it and get in someone who will offer more to Arsenal on the field of player. Cazorla is certainly a good player but there is absolutely no point keeping him if he can’t stay fit. His squad space and wages is better off being spent on someone else who is able to deliver more.
A move for someone like Verrati who seems available or Rakitic who also seems to be available will make a lot of sense for Arsenal. Arsenal needs to put sentiment aside and put on their football business “thinking cap”.
