Revealed! Arsenal almost signed Brazilian winger from Real Madrid last month

Arsenal’s newly hired technical director Edu contacted La Liga giants Real Madrid earlier this summer transfer window to enquire about the availability of the Brazilian prodigy Vinicius Junior.

Edu in synchrony with the head of football Raul Sanllehi oversaw a major overhaul of Gunners’ first-team roster in the summer, which saw the like of Kieran Tierney, David Luiz, Dani Ceballos and club-record signing Nicolas Pepe join to bolster Unai Emery’s options.

The Spanish manager, who narrowly failed to secure UEFA Champions League qualification during his first season in charge, identified the need to bolster an attack which relied heavily upon the goals of strike duo Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang and Alexandre Lacazette.

In spite of operating with a reported budget of just £45m, Sanllehi was able to seal a deal which will see Arsenal pay £72 million to LOSC Lille over the course of Nicola’s five-year contract.
