Arse Talks brings you latest update on Arsenal news from top media sites like Daily Mail, Metro, The Express, The Independent, The Telegraph, SkySports and so on.
Wife of the highly-sought Inter Milan forward Mauro Icardi has revealed how north London club arch-rivals Arsenal and Tottenham Hotspur went head-to-head on the summer for the services of the Argentinian’s forward.
Report according to the Italian news outlet Gazzetta dello Sport claimed the Spurs manager Mauricio Pochettino and Arsene Wenger were both active in the summer transfer market to provide competition and partner for Harry Kane and Olivier Giroud.
However, neither Arsenal’s not Tottenham was able to meet with the Italian giants asking price for the forward. Earlier in the summer, it was revealed by th club owner, Erik Thohir that Inter will be open to selling to the club captain to Arsenal for over £50million, as per London Evening Standard.
The Argentinian forward wife has lifted the lid on the extent to which the duo Premier League club’s went to convince his husband and client in convincing him to pen a new deal. She said,
“[Inter sporting director] Piero Ausillo had asked me to take any offers from clubs [for Icardi] to him, so I went with those of Paris Saint-Germain, Napoli and Juventus.
”There was also Tottenham too, but they went directly to Piero.”
She also went on to revealed that Icardi’s commitment has always been to the Nerazzurri, and shares of how she secured his new contract with the Italian club,
“The first day of the transfer market, I called Piero, and said ‘do you remember the promise [of a new contract] last year?”
“He said, ‘Wanda, I hear you’. At that point, I demanded the truth. Mauro has to stay or leave. Because there are so many offers.”
Although Icardi’s wife did not expressly mention Arsenal, but it is thought that Arsenal had come close to agreeing a new terms with the player himself and would have been in pole position to land their man, if the Italian club had decided to sell him.
In the end, Wenger was able to complete the transfer of 28-year-old Lucas Perez for Arsenal, with just five days of the transfer window remaining, but our more convincing solution to the striking problem has come from the in-form Alexis Sanchez in the centre-forward position.
Meanwhile, our arch-rivals appeared to give up on the forward sooner, after which they secured a £17m deal for Dutch forward Vincent Janssen in mid-July.
