Henrikh Mkhitaryan is expected to not travel with the Arsenal squad to Azerbaijan on Thursday for their Europa League group match at Qarabag.
The Gunners face the Azerbaijani champions in Baku’s Olympic Stadium but it is understood the playmaker could decide against making the trip due to the tensions between Azerbaijan and his native Armenia.
The club were prepared to allow Mkhitaryan to make a decision and he is set to stay behind as he did when he was a Borussia Dortmund player in 2015.
The 29-year-old would be required to apply to the Azerbaijani government for a permit to travel to the country.
When Dortmund played Gabala in the Europa League in October 2015, the Azerbaijani embassy indicated to Germany he would have been granted one.
This raises doubts about his availability for the Europa League final, should Arsenal get there, as it is due to happen in Baku next May.
