There’s been the wide acceptance that Arsenal have a formidable team but there’s the lack of leadership among the players.
However, Arsenal Captain Per Mertesacker has revealed that Kierran Gibbs has every attribute of a leader and he is capable of challenging Nacho Monreal for a spot in the team.
The German defender, who is currently side-lined with a knee injury, has seen the England international take responsibility this season and is convinced he’s become a leader in the dressing room.
Mertesacker was made the Captain of Arsenal last summer but he has been on the sidelines due to an injury that will keep him out until next year.
But he has been impressed with the attitude of the 27-year-old in his absence.
‘He (Gibbs) and Nacho [Monreal] have a healthy competition for the left-back position and he’s performed well whenever he’s been picked this season,’ he said ahead of Arsenal’s 2-0 defeat to Southampton in the EFL Cup.
‘Kieran captained us against Reading and I feel that he is becoming more of a leader with every passing year.
‘He’s taking that responsibility. He’s been here for a long time, he’s seen a lot of players come in and leave.
‘I believe he feels he can contribute off the pitch as well as on it now, by being a leader and an example.
