Arsenal midfielder Mesut Ozil was not just the object of criticism in the game against Everton, the Germany international was almost involved in a fight with McCarthy of Everton.

Ozil was at the centre of an argument as both teams headed down the tunnel at Goodison Park but Wenger has played down the severity of the incident.

‘I was close to it, I didn’t see a lot,’ said the Arsenal manager.

‘There was a little bit of a push but nothing dramatic.’

Asked about McCarthy’s spat with Ozil, Wenger replied: ‘He was very physical today McCarthy but that’s down to the referee but I cannot interfere too much in that.

‘The referee has to make the game respected.’
