Will Arsenal Make the Top Four?

Having missed out on a lucrative Champions League place for the last few seasons, many fans started the season feeling optimistic that this would be the year the Gunners would break back into the top four. However, with 11 games played in the Premier League, they have not quite lived up to those early expectations.

Despite the big-money signing of Nicolas Pepe, the team has struggled to fire on all cylinders. Losing to Liverpool wasn’t a huge blow but a shock loss to Sheffield United along with five draws so far have left Arsenal six points adrift of the top four, just over a quarter way through the season.

It isn’t helping matters that there is a lot of negative energy around the Arsenal team right now, with the recent incident involving Granit Xhaka’s angry reaction to fans, dragging the team into even further turmoil. In his message to fans, he failed to apologise, leaving the issue to rumble on and cause further unrest.

What is the answer to Arsenal’s problems?

One scenario that has been recently discussed, is the possible sacking of manager Unai Emery, with fans becoming increasingly frustrated at his reluctance to play Pepe, despite his match-winning freekicks in the Europa League. There is even talk of Jose Mourinho being lined up for the role, which would be an interesting development, given his deep ties with Arsenal’s London rivals, Chelsea.

Premier League betting odds have lowered for Mourinho to become the next Arsenal manager, but he has also been heavily linked with a move to Bayern Munich. It’s best to keep up to date with all of the Premier League betting news regarding the possible management switch-up, as Emery is proving increasingly shaky when it comes to the stability of his position at the club.

The call for new signings in January

The January transfer window is still two months away but it could give Arsenal the opportunity to look at pulling off a major shake-up of the team. Mesut Ozil is reportedly earning around £350,000 a week and hasn’t made the squad for the majority of the games this season, so it is a situation that needs addressing.

There are also concerns that Xhaka won’t play for the club again, following the sensitivity of his current situation. David Luiz was a surprise late move in the summer transfer and one that really hasn’t paid off.

Fans call for Arteta to repace Emery

If a new manager is to come in, he might be able to turn around the fortunes of these three key players. Mourinho has worked with Luiz before and he would no doubt relish the opportunity to work with the Lacazette and Aubameyang strikeforce. Some fans have even called for former Gunners’ legend Mikel Arteta to replace Emery.

New defenders in the market

January is never an easy month to bring new players in but, with the right budget, it’s not impossible. Back in September Emmanuel Frimpong stated that Arsenal should make a move for Kalidou Koulibaly and that is now looking like a much-needed solution. He has been subjected to racist abuse in Italy this week and could well be open to a move to the Premier League.

Martin Keown outlined two Genk defenders as potential good signings for Arsenal when he was commenting for BT Sport in a game they played in recently. He suggested his former team should go for Carlos Cuesta or Jhon Lucumi.

It looks like the next few weeks will be crucial in Arsenal’s season and, if Emery does get replaced, the new manager will need a good transfer kitty and will have some big decisions to make in their quest to return to Champions League football.
